Choose your stylist wisely: Professionalism matters a lot while getting the cornrows done in the right way. This is because, depending on their professional expertise, you can ensure how smooth will be the entire process and how long the cornrows will last on your hair.

Washing: You must have a habit of washing your hair regularly. But if you have cornrowed your hair, you should avoid washing it as much as possible. This is because washing can spoil the braiding fast, and you may lose the nice-looking cornrows soon. While washing, wear a net cap before applying shampoo and carefully wet the hair only through the net. Note that using hard shampoo can not only damage your cornrows but also your hair. So always use a mild shampoo for hair wash. You should also not use the shampoo directly and apply it by pressing the shampoo on all over the head by your palms. Keep the shampoo for a few minutes on your hair and wash it with cold water. The hair must not remain soapy at all.

Conditioning: conditioning the hair helps in reducing the breakage after putting the cornrows off from the hair. You can use a leave-in or rinse-off conditioner for its easy application between hair. This is because, if you fail to dilute the conditioner properly, it may lead to dryness of the hair tracks and residuals and thereby make it look untidy and dirty. You can apply conditioner twice a week following this technique only and guard your hair against damage or any bad odor.

Moisturizing: This is the thing you should obtain regularly. Hair moisturizers, most of the time, come in spray sheens, and you can use them to avoid excessive dryness on the scalp. Avoid using oil-based moisturizers on cornrows as it can leave your hair more oily and thereby damage your hair and cornrow braiding. You can use moisturizers with oil such as olive, jojoba, etc. for this purpose. Use it in adequate amounts with a focus to minimize itching.

Go satin: To protect the moisture level of your hair, use satin cap or pillowcase. You can easily safeguard your cornrows against moisture stripping and maintain it properly. If you are in use of cotton pillows, then you are doing potent harm to your hair as it soaks the hair moisture and makes them dry. It may lead to split-ends on your hair and it will not look as beautiful as it was initially. So either wear a satin cap or use a pillowcase while sleeping. If you are using a cap, ensure it's not tight enough so that you can comfortably wear it without the hassle of headache. Wrap your hair before going to bed to avoid any breakage or frizzy hair afterward.
